Colin,
this was almost it. In fact I am using the listings package which has a specific option upquote. I found the answer here:

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/166790/how-can-i-get-straight-double-quotes-in-listings

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Jens

From this discussion: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1662037/how-to-write-programming-code-containing-the-character-in-latex

A quick try would be the `upquote' package... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

\usepackage{upquote}

Hello Collin,
I am sure that I don't use non-ascii single-quotes anywhere, so this must be pdflatex that "translates" them.
I'd have to look if there is a way to inhibit this, character coding support is quite fragile, there, I find.

I noticed that in the code snippets the double quotes are, nicely, ASCII double quotes, but the *single* quotes are not ASCII single quotes. They are the `‘` character. Would be nice, for copy/paste, if they were proper ASCII.

Looking forward to the print edition, I haven't bought a programming book in a long time, but I'm looking forward to reading this one!
